Athena, an ancient Greek deity revered for her wisdom and martial prowess, emerged from the confluence of Greek mythology and Roman influences as Minerva. As patron and guardian of numerous cities across Greece, Athena's presence was particularly pronounced in Athens, the city that likely bore her name. Typically depicted in art with a helmet and spear at the ready, she is also associated with owls, olive trees, snakes, and the Gorgoneion. In this particular statue, Athena is shown wielding a shield and spear, although the latter appears to have been broken or removed at some point. Her iconic helmet rests atop her head, rather than concealing her face as it often does in other depictions.
