Athena from the western pediment of the Temple of Aphaia

I wanted to model the Athena from the west pediment of the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina. I gathered as many photos as possible and used Metashape to create the model. This statue is part of a pediment group that stood in the west pediment of the Temple of Aphaia. Unusually the temple had three pediment sculpture groups. One of them was set on the ground while a newer Classical Age group took their place on the east pediment. Athena stood at the center of the group between two groups of warriors. She has the usual hallmarks of sculpture from the Archaic Age. She is shown frontally, wearing an elaborate stylized chiton. She holds a shield with her left hand while her right hand previously held a spear. She would have been painted brightly with elaborate patterns. She has the smile of many sculptures from that era. She possibly had metal accessories. Nearly all the sculptures from the pediments were excavated and taken to Munich, Germany. They were restored by Bertel Thorvaldsen. Most of the restorations were removed as opinions about authenticity and historic truth evolved. This version of the Athena shows her partially restored.
