Athena was the Greek virgin goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature. She was born from Zeus' forehead, fully grown and clad in armour, making her birth unique among the gods. Instead of a mother, she had the power of wisdom guiding her every move. In battle, Athena proved fierce and brave, but only when defending the state and home from invading forces. As patron of the city, handcraft, and agriculture, she encouraged innovation and progress. She invented numerous tools that transformed human life, including the bridle, which tamed horses, the trumpet, flute, pot, rake, plow, yoke, ship, and chariot. Athena embodied wisdom, reason, and purity, making her a favourite among the gods. Zeus entrusted his thunderbolt to her, solidifying their special bond. The olive tree was her sacred symbol, often depicted alongside an owl. After winning a contest against Poseidon, Athena became the patron goddess of Athens by gifting the city the olive tree. It's clear that the city and its namesake goddess share a common origin; Athens is in plural form because it represents the sisterhood of the goddess residing there. Similarly, Athena was known as Mykene in Mycenae, Thebe in Thebes, and Minerva, Athina, or Athene by other cultures.
