Inscription - 'Ate'aqab son of Abia Alas!' These Roman Syrian faces, carved from stone, depict individuals who lived between AD 50-270. They originated in tombs just outside Palmyra's city limits. Despite their Syrian attire, they're rendered in a strikingly realistic Roman style. Three distinct types of tombs were constructed for wealthy residents: single-story house tombs, multi-story tomb towers, and underground rock-cut tombs. Inside each tomb, rows of compartments were set into the walls to hold the deceased. Each compartment was sealed with a plaque featuring a stone portrait of the deceased individual accompanied by a concise inscription.
