The Atari 2600 is a home video game console developed by Atari, Inc. Introduced on September 11, 1977, it revolutionized the industry with its use of microprocessor-based hardware and ROM cartridges containing game code, a concept pioneered by the Fairchild Channel F in 1976. Unlike earlier consoles featuring non-microprocessor dedicated hardware, which could only play games physically built into the unit, this innovative format paved the way for a vast library of games to be created. Officially marketed as the Atari VCS from 1977 until late 1982, the system was later renamed the "Atari 2600" after the release of the Atari 5200 in November 1982. The name change occurred due to the unit's part number, CX2600. Typically bundled with two joystick controllers, a pair of paddle controllers, and an initial game cartridge featuring Combat, the system later included Pac-Man.
