Atar U of Copan

The altar was commissioned by Yahaw Chan Ah Baak, a prominent figure who served as half-brother and advisor to Yax Pac, the sixteenth ruler of Copan. Archaeologists discovered the altar in the present-day village of Copan Ruinas, but unfortunately, any potential connection between it and ancient Maya structures had been irreparably erased by modern construction projects and the relocation of the sculpture. However, given its size and weight, it is highly plausible that the monument was once situated near a building complex within the same site, rather than being transported from a distant location.
