The Atago class destroyer takes its fundamental design from a significantly improved and expanded version of the Kongō-class destroyers. The class boasts spacious accommodations, allowing for highly adaptable operation. One notable enhancement is an additional hangar capable of carrying one SH-60K helicopter, offering superior helicopter handling facilities compared to the Kongō class/Arleigh Burke class (Flight I) which only featured helicopter platforms without supporting equipment. To further solidify the Atago class' role as command centers, the bridge is positioned two decks higher than on Arleigh Burke class Flight IIA vessels, resulting in a full load displacement exceeding 10,000 tons - an achievement for JMSDF surface combatants. The gun caliber has increased from the 54 caliber of the Kongō class to 62 caliber with enhanced powder charges, enabling a firing range of up to 38 kilometers. In line with Japanese ship refit standards, American-made Harpoon missiles used in the initial Kongō class configuration have been replaced by the domestically produced Type 90 (SSM-1B) surface-to-surface guided missiles.
