The Saxon, a cost-effective armored personnel carrier, was designed as a "battle-taxi" for long UK reinforcement journeys. Based on a revised Bedford M series 4x4 truck chassis and commercial components, this lightweight wheeled vehicle boasts higher speed and easier maintenance compared to tracked counterparts. It features armoring against small-arms fire and shell splinters but isn't intended for anti-vehicle weaponry resistance. Armed with a single local air defense machine gun, it can carry up to ten men. The Saxon's hull is made of welded steel with a V-shaped under-chassis plate for mine detonation deflection, offering seating for up to ten troops, although eight with equipment is more comfortable. The roof houses stowage area, while some IS (Patrol) versions were deployed in Northern Ireland for various internal security operations, including use as ambulances and riot control shields with extendible wings, featuring minor modifications like searchlights and wire cutters.
