Astron Scout - the FIRST commercial model rocket

I purchased a vintage 1960s Estes Astron Scout Model Rocket kit. This kit, designed by Vern Estes, was the first commercially available hobbyist model rocket. Built examples of this kit are in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum in the United States, and one that has actually been flown to space resides in the Seattle Museum of Flight.

I painstakingly measured and re-modeled the kit in fusion. This file contains 2 versions. One is a model that is an exact copy of my kit, the second is a modified version that prints well and is quick to assemble.

At this time, I have not flown the model, but I anticipate making updates after I do. For instance, I imagine I will need to thicken he walls of rocket body somewhat to make it recoverable.

In both cases, the model features a part called “steel rod” which originally is incorporated to allow the engine to reverse-fire and change the weight balance of the rocket, to enable better tumble-recovery. I think a section of wire coat hanger would work well.
