Asteroid models - Kleopatra, Castalia, Geographos

thingiverse

Asteroid models, including Castalia, Kleopatra, and Geographos, have been reconstructed using radar and optical data. These digital models were created by Scott Hudson from Washington State University (http://users.tricity.wsu.edu/~hudson/Research/Asteroids/models.html). It is essential to note that the models are not scaled relative to each other, as Castalia measures 1.8 x 0.75 km, Geographos is 5.1 x 1.8 km, and Kleopatra is 217 x 81 km. The STL files were sized to create buildable models without support structures despite their peculiar shapes. These files were converted from .obj format to .stl using Rhino3d v4.0 and printed on a Makerbot with white ABS. However, the discolored areas observed in the photos resulted from leaving the objects in acetone for 45 seconds, an attempt to smooth out some of the threadiness near the base.
