A Protective and Blessing Genie The site of Khorsabad (the ancient Dur-Sharrukin), excavated between 1843 and 1854 by Paul-Emile Botta and Victor Place, revealed the presence of orthostats, carved slabs that safeguarded and adorned the base of the brick walls. This monumental sculpture, a winged genie with a frontal face, was placed in the inner passage of one of the city gates. Another genie, symmetrical, stood opposite it. Both came immediately behind the pair of human-faced winged bulls guarding the gate. Like the other genies placed at certain entrances to the palace, this one was a protective genie. But he is also a blessing genie: with the pine cone he shakes, liquid drawn from a small bucket is sprinkled over the passage and its visitors.
