Ashurbanipal's final residence, the North Palace, was shielded by mystical sentinels carved into stone slabs that lined its walls. At the top of this panel stood three ugallu, or 'Great Lions,' one of the most formidable guardians known to man. They brandished daggers and wielded maces, symbols of unyielding authority. The fractured figure to the left of the ugallu may be the 'House of God,' while the figure in the lower register was a protective urmahlilu or 'Lion-Man.'
