They are believed to be used to commemorate a celebration of worship or a major event in the life of the dedicator. They would fill large numbers of Palmyrenian temples. The altar bears a dedication to a deity written in Palmyrian script, which is difficult to decipher here. It also features a relief that represents two standing men wearing a belted tunic and a coat. The one on the left puts his hands against his temples while the one on the right raises his two arms on either side of his head in a gesture of imploration.
