AR-10 is an American, semi-automatic, gas-operated rifle that was developed in the late 1950s by ArmaLite. The design was later sold to Fairchild Aviation Corporation, where it was further developed into what would become the iconic M16 rifle. Originally, the AR-10 used a linear piston barrel with a phenolic fiberglass buttstock and forward grip with accessory rail. When first introduced in 1956, this revolutionary rifle incorporated many innovative features that greatly simplified the task of operating an automatic firearm and also provided significantly increased reliability by employing what was then called a 'gas expansion system'.
