In its current form, the áo dài consists of a fitted silk tunic paired with trousers. Áo means shirt, while dài refers to long. The term ao dai initially applied to the attire worn at the imperial court in Huế during the 18th century. Over time, this outfit evolved into the áo ngọc thôn, an elegant five-paneled aristocratic gown commonly worn during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Influenced by French fashion trends, artists Nguyen Cat Tien and others in Hanoi revitalized the classic design of the áo ngọc thôn to create a modern Vietnamese dress during the 1920s and 1930s. The new look gained momentum through various promotional campaigns run by the writers and designers associated with the Self-Reliant Literary Group (Tự Lực văn đoàn). By the mid-20th century, fashion experts in Saigon transformed the design further, producing a sleeker version that became the defining garment of modern Vietnamese women. The áo dài enjoyed widespread popularity among women in South Vietnam during the 1960s and early 1970s. Traditionally, men in Vietnam wear the áo gấm (a thicker, intricately designed fabric) for Tết or other significant occasions.
