While simple, primitive forms existed long before the 19th century, it was during the start of the 20th century that design and aesthetics really took off. As more women began to smoke in the early 1900s, receptacles became closer to art forms. Many women avoided traditional receptacles as they failed to reflect feminine values through an activity declared exclusive to men. What emerged were detailed, often very fancy receptacles. These depicted pastoral scenes of maidens wandering through vibrant landscapes.
