Asclepius

Roman replica of 5th-century BC Greek sculpture from Venice's Museo Archeologico Inv. 107 The legendary Asclepius was a hero and god of medicine in ancient Greece's rich mythology and religion. He embodied the healing aspect of the medical arts; his remarkable daughters include Hygieia, the goddess/personification of health, cleanliness, and sanitation, Iaso, the goddess of recuperation from illness, Aceso, the goddess of the healing process, Aglæa/Ægle, the goddess of good health's radiant glow, and Panacea, the universal remedy. Asclepius was closely associated with the Roman/Etruscan god Vediovis and the Egyptian Imhotep. He shared the epithet Paean ("the Healer") with his father Apollo, one of the twelve Olympian gods. The staff of Asclepius remains a powerful symbol of medicine today; it is a snake-entwined rod that has been revered for centuries. Those devoted physicians and attendants who served this god were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
