In Roman mythology, Hygieia was the daughter of the renowned physician-god Asclepius and his wife Epione. A skilled healer herself, Hygieia embodied the qualities of good health, cleanliness, and proper hygiene. Her father Asclepius, a legendary figure in Greek history, played a pivotal role as the hero and god of medicine, representing the art of healing through medicine. His daughters, including Hygieia, Iaso, Aceso, Aglæa, and Panacea, each personified unique aspects of the healing process: recuperation from illness, the healing process itself, beauty and splendor, and universal remedy respectively. Asclepius was also associated with Vediovis, a Roman god, and Imhotep, an Egyptian sage, further underscoring his significance in various cultures. His son Apollo, sharing the epithet Paean ("the Healer"), revered him as a master healer. To this day, the staff of Asclepius, a serpent-entwined rod, remains a potent symbol of medicine worldwide. Those who served this god were known as Therapeutae, a group of devoted physicians and attendants dedicated to his noble cause.
