Artillery Spool Holder
prusaprinters

The Artillery Sidewinder X1 came with a poorly designed spool holder that mounts on the top extrusion. There are quite a few modifications available and I have been using one of them for over a year now, but it has a problem.

More than once I've had a print fail because the extruder couldn't pull the filament free from a wedged strand along the edge. It doesn't happen often, but it's ruined a couple of prints, so time for an upgrade.

The design came from a user of the Pyramid A1.1, a pretty good printer, very similar in design to the Sidewinder. I made a very small modification to the original design, it needed a cutout on the back to avoid rubbing against the top linkage belt. (The Pyramid version is printed in red, Artillery with cutout in green.)

I almost forgot, he has another design posted that will hold the filament sensor, but you will have to create your own cut out for the belt. I use Octoprint and the filament sensor on the Sidewinder doesn't work with it. I just disconnected the sensor and left the wire hanging.

This requires two T-slot nuts and two screws. I used M5 x 12mm.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

Ender 3 Pro

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

0.3mm

Infill:

50%

Filament:

IIIDMax PLA+ Green

Notes:

I've printed this in PLA/PLA+ a few times. I went with 5 perimeters, 5 bottom and 5 top layers, and 50% infill because PLA will bend over time with applied pressure and this needs to hold a kg of filament for long periods of time.

My original 3 perimeter PLA version was sagging from heavy use. I would recommend PETG, it won't distort over time the way PLA does. However, the 5 perimeter version is holding up quite well in PLA.

Category: 3D Printer Accessories
