Although I utilize ABL in daily life on both printers, I calibrate my bed from time to time as precisely as possible at operating temperature. A very good first layer is extremely crucial for bed adhesion and dimensionally accurate prints. I firmly believe that in combination, these results are unbeatable. The capabilities of ABL are somewhat limited. I only use ABL to correct the last imperfections and it works flawlessly with it. In my opinion, the bed must be accurately calibrated to remain as tension-free as possible even at operating temperature. For this reason, I created this small holder for a digital profile depth gauge type "Tyre Gauge". It functions perfectly on my PKM8 and now also on the Sidewinder X1. Then you need an M3 grub screw and a rubber band, then you can start working... The small cap needs to be placed onto the measuring sensor to prevent it from scratching the bed. The measurement is quite accurate, but definitely sufficient for its intended purpose. The results are consistently reproducible. I operate my X1 without an extruder cover. It didn't really fit past the GT2 belt and then I lost my patience. Of course you have to loosen and remove the cover temporarily.
