Pollen from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) originates in the Asteraceae family. The chemical artemisinin, extracted from leaves of Artemisia annua, serves as the basis for a global standard treatment for malaria. Chinese scientist Tu Youyou received the 2015 Nobel Prize for her work developing it from traditional Chinese medicine. Artemisia pollen is one of the most common causes of hay fever in North America and the primary airborne carrier of a bacterial toxin that can exacerbate asthma conditions in central Europe. Technical description of Artemisia pollen, according to Paldat (Halbritter & Sam, 2016), consists of small isopolar monads, which are spheroidal or prolate, circular or lobate in polar view, tricolporate, with microechinate/granulate exine.
