This is a marble sculpture of Artemis, renowned to the Romans as Diana, standing firmly on her left leg, while her right foot extends freely behind her. She wears a short chiton, suitable to her position as a goddess of the hunt, an intricately crafted diadem, and ornate sandals. Initially, she would have grasped a bow in her left hand. In other statues of similar kind, the goddess is depicted striding forward, but here, she stands as if seized by epiphany, an impression that is heightened by the high classicizing style of the figure, characterized by wind-blown drapery and robust idealized features.
