Art and Science (Dutch: De Kunst En De Wetenschap) is a masterpiece carved from marble by Gilles-Lambert Godecharle. Born on December 2, 1750, in Brussels, Belgium, Godecharle was a skilled sculptor who trained under the renowned Laurent Delvaux, one of only two artists of international fame in his workshop. As a prominent figure in Neoclassicism, he represented the Austrian Netherlands alongside another talented artist. Empress Maria Theresa recognized his early potential and granted him a scholarship to pursue further studies, first in Paris and then in Rome. Godecharle's official commissions from Napoleon and William I of the Netherlands earned him recognition as one of the most skilled sculptors of his time. His iconic pediment sculptures for the Chamber of Representatives and Senate of the Austrian Netherlands, now part of the Belgian Federal Parliament in Brussels, are his most notable public works. Although these masterpieces are preserved at the Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels, Godecharle's true legacy lies in his numerous portrait busts that showcase his exceptional talent. Godecharle's son, Napoleon Godecharle, left a lasting impact by bequeathing a significant portion of their family fortune to the City of Brussels. This generous donation enabled the establishment of the Prix Godecharle, an award honoring outstanding artists in painting, sculpture, and architecture. This remarkable artwork is part of "Scan The World," a groundbreaking initiative created by MyMiniFactory to preserve fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe for free public access.
