Arqueta Hispano-Árabe - MUSEO DE NAVARRA

sketchfab

Arqueta hispano-árabe from the Leire Monastery in the Navarra Museum. Rectangular with troncopiramidal cover that for many years contained relics of Saints Nunilo and Alodia. Its scheme adapts to the general one in this type of pieces. A field of atauriques, and vegetal ornaments, with intercalated human and animal figures, covers it completely. On top, and contained in polilobulated medallions, scenes or isolated figures unfold. The iconography is very rich reproducing passages from the lives of caliphs in gardens and palaces; characters appear seated on thrones sustained by lions, drinking wine, eating pomegranates, and listening to music, while pages fan them and serve, or fight mounted on horses and elephants. On the back side a man on foot, armed with lance and shield, fights against two lions. Also abundant are fierce animal battles.
