Since 1940, the main antitank vehicle in service with the US Army was the M6 GMC. Equipped with a 37mm gun installed on its rear bed, this basic four-wheeled truck was only protected by a frontal mask. The crew riding in it remained exposed, and the M6's armor was light. Despite these drawbacks, the M6 continued to serve until 1945. Nevertheless, its shortcomings prompted the US Army ordnance department to start developing a new vehicle in July 1941. This vehicle needed to be more versatile than the M6, capable of navigating rough terrain with ease and boasting improved off-road performance. Its armor had to be comprehensive, shielding not just the 37mm gun but also housing it within a protective turret. In addition, the new vehicle's anti-personnel armament required significant upgrades, calling for the integration of both heavy .50 caliber and .30 caliber machine guns.
