Armadillos are tiny, tank-like creatures, armored mammals native to the Americas. Placental, meaning their babies develop inside their mothers, these incredible animals belong to a specific order called Cingulata, boasting an extremely protective leathery armor shell that sets them apart from other critters. The Chlamyphoridae and Dasypodidae families are thriving in this modern world as the sole surviving families within the order, sharing ancestry with sloths and anteaters. Interestingly enough, both of these amazing creatures fall under a larger grouping known as Xenarthra - yes, the very same category where their armoured cousins dwell! By the way, did you know that 'armadillo' actually translates to "little armoured one" when pronounced in Spanish?
