Armada Chest, Nuremberg, 17th Century, Polychrome Iron. Musée du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium). Made with ReMake and ReCap from AutoDesk. In the 17th century, locksmiths in Nuremberg excel at crafting polychrome iron security chests. Renowned for their unwavering integrity, these chests are distributed throughout Europe. The smaller ones, typically used as jewelry containers, measure only a few centimeters, while the larger ones, reserved for banks and government offices, can reach lengths of up to two meters. The locking mechanism often dominates the entire lid, controlled by a key inserted through a hidden lock on top of the lid. The front lock is merely an illusion, designed to mislead. Due to its rarity, this copy is highly prized. The term "armada chest" originates from the misconception that these chests were used on Spanish ships to store funds for financing the Armada's campaigns in 1588.
