The iconic Arcadia Theatre was constructed between 1802 and 1804 under the architectural direction of David Gilly, who originally designed it as a municipal theater capable of accommodating approximately 800 seats. In 1879, a new building emerged to house this prestigious theatre. For years prior to the inauguration of the Opera House in Poznan in 1913, Arcadia stood as the premier cultural venue, where internationally-renowned guests such as Ferenc Liszt and Niccolo Paganini were welcomed with open arms. Furthermore, Arcadia served as a bustling cafe, offering an attractive alternative to visitors from near and far. It was in this exact spot that tragedy struck on December 27th, 1918: during the storming of the presidium of the Prussian police opposite Arcadia, Franciszek Ratajczak - a pivotal figure in the Wielkopolska Uprising - gave his last breath in battle. From 1927 to 1939, this very location served as a radio studio for Polish Radio. For nearly two decades since 1992, the theatre has preserved and adhered to its long-standing traditions, thriving under the stewardship of Theatre of the Eighth Day. As we stroll along the ground floor today, we find it now home to a sprawling branch of EMPiK - Poland's beloved multimedia giant, as well as an informational center providing essential services for Poznan citizens.
