Ariadne's Head

The head is a masterful work of rosy white marble, crafted with delicate precision; the red marble bust shines brightly. The crown, formed from intricately arranged leaves and clusters of ivy, distinctly defines this figure's character. (Rachou, 1912). According to Du Mege, this exquisite head was also unearthed in Martres, where it was placed alongside Bacchic heads that are the subject of a previous notice, within the episcopal palace of Rieux. A corresponding torso was discovered and relocated around 1860 into the cabinet of Victor de Frézalz, advisor to the Parliament of Toulouse, as well as an avid collector and connoisseur of antiquities. (D. C. in Toulouse and antiquity found in the eighteenth century, page 22). Head of Ariadne, Bacchante or Bacchus: The head is cut at the neck level, with the nose slightly damaged; the hair, separated by a median line, comprises fine, corrugated locks brought back to frame the face. A regal crown made from ivy and small bunches of grapes adorns this masterwork. Partially visible ears sit atop delicate features. Notable curls of hair appear on each temple. The eyes are small yet expressive; the pupils are smooth and rounded. Subtle arches suggest themselves. A gentle, open mouth invites contemplation.
