Who is Portrayed? Ariadne (Latin: Ariadne), in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Minos, King of Crete, son of Zeus and his queen Pasiphae, daughter of Helios. She is primarily known for her association with mazes and labyrinths due to her involvement in the myths of the Minotaur and Theseus. Her father appointed her as guardian of the labyrinth where sacrifices were made as part of reparations (either to Poseidon or to Athena, depending on the version of the myth); later, she assisted Theseus in overcoming the Minotaur and saving potential sacrificial victims. In other stories, she became the bride of the god Dionysus, with varying accounts questioning her mortality or divinity. Technical Specifications A bust is a sculpted or cast representation of the upper part of the human figure, depicting a person's head and neck, and a variable portion of the chest and shoulders. The piece is typically supported by a plinth. These forms recreate the likeness of an individual. These may be made from any medium used for sculpture, such as marble, bronze, terracotta or wood. A parallel term, aust, represents the upper part of an animal or mythical creature. Sculptural portrait heads from classical antiquity are sometimes displayed as busts; however, these are often fragments from full-body statues, or were created to be inserted into an existing body. About the Artist The artist responsible for this work is currently unknown.
