Aria the Dragon - Negative Mold for Metal Casting
thingiverse
I cast this basic negative mold for Aria the Dragon based on loubie's model using Rose's Metal, a Bismuth/Tin/Lead alloy that melts at 208F, a relatively low temperature that requires care when handling. This unique metal has next to no expansion or contraction as it heats up or cools down, which makes it ideal for casting complex designs like this one without worrying about the mold melting or cracking open. To achieve this, I pour liquid Rose's Metal into the ABS mold, taking advantage of its lower melting point compared to ABS plastic and the minimal risk of air bubbles getting trapped inside. However, please be aware that Rose's Metal can burn you if not handled carefully. For mold removal, pure Acetone is an effective solvent that helps dissolve the ABS quickly, leaving no residue behind. Alternatively, HIPS plastic molds can also be used with d-Limonene or turpentine solvents for safe and easy removal.
