The Argo Nautix, an ancient Phoenician trading ship named Alephnun (oxfish), was a type of trade vessel known as Gauloi from around 1500 BC. This robust ship had a spacious interior with strong stem posts firmly anchoring the bow and stern ends. The sturdy stern oars enabled it to sail efficiently through the Mediterranean waters. A large direct sail on two curved beams supported by a central mast provided excellent maneuverability. At the prow stem post, they securely fastened a large clay amphora, which stored fresh drinking water for the crew. The Phoenicians' greatest achievement was developing the round boat, a broad-beamed vessel that mainly relied on sails instead of oars. This allowed for more space to transport heavy cargo than the narrow galleys typically used at the time. As a result, these ships dominated trade across the Mediterranean and beyond its borders.
