ARGELES SUR MER FIN XIII s.
sketchfab
In the late XIII century, the city of Argèles enclosed itself behind imposing walls flanked by 10 towers. Three fortified gates and a deep moat completed the defensive system. The towers projected outward from the walls and the battlements. Slits in front and on the sides allowed for archery fire. Two walkways, one covered, the other exterior, permitted a complete tour of the walls. Later, the moats were filled in and converted into gardens. A cadastral map from the Napoleonic period shows buildings erected in front of the walls, hiding them; these can be found inside habitations (at ground level). Part of the towers remains visible (towers #3,4,5,6,7,8,9), Mart gate and a section of walkway #4 and wall sections 3,4,5.
