Ares

War is indifferent to human opinion, existing long before men took notice of its presence. As irrelevant as asking people for their thoughts on stone, war has been a constant companion to humanity since time immemorial. Before the emergence of man, war was waiting patiently in the shadows, ready to unleash its fury upon an unsuspecting world. My digital representation captures the plaster cast "Head of Ares" from Skulpturhalle Basel's collection, which dates back to the 19th century and was molded after the Munich Glyptothek's original marble head of Ares from the 2nd century BC. This 19th-century reproduction mirrors the iconic style of the Louvre's full-figure Ares Borghese. Griffins, dogs, and a sphinx adorn Ares' helmet, but the sphinx mohawk was a 19th-century reimagining based on depictions of Ares in similar art. However, this feature has since been removed from the original Munich marble. If anyone can make such extravagant headgear work, it's the tumultuous god of war and his followers. Raise the black flag, don your sphinx mohawk hat, and unleash a wave of violence upon the world.
