Area of a Parallelogram
thingiverse
To demonstrate that a parallelogram's area equals its base multiplied by height, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC8gYuBQaK4. Three puzzle sets enable different parallelograms with the same area to form the same rectangle when arranged. Teachers can use the Exploration Guide (pdf) for questions that foster mathematical thinking. The associated Common Core standards are 3.MD.5, 3MD.8, and 4.MD.3. Print out the base container and puzzle sets, then follow the instructions provided in colors: black (with white text), orange, yellow, and green. If set C doesn't fit correctly, try an alternate version. SketchUp source files are included in a zip archive.
