The Sambaqui of Cabeçuda, located in Laguna, Santa Catarina, is considered one of the largest and most important sambaquis in southern Brazil, both historically and in prehistoric occupation. This site, dated between 4120±120 and 1800±40 years BP, was excavated by Luiz de Castro Faria between 1950 and 1951. Archaeological interventions conducted here revealed an extraordinary wealth of archaeological artifacts - lithic artifacts and human skeletons, fragments of charcoals, fish bones, layers of ashes and shells, and blocks of diabase. The Sambaqui of Cabeçuda was revisited by a team from the National Museum in 2010, 2011, and recently in 2017. The study of the stratigraphy of the site was done through analysis of profiles. A trench excavation of natural levels in 16 m2 began on the highest part of the site, with collection of archaeological material and sediment samples. This present record presents that area of excavation located at Locus 1 of Cabeçuda.
