This USB cover prevents accidental connections between a shield and an Arduino's USB port, especially when the shield wasn't designed to bypass the USB port. When prototyping your own shields for Arduinos, it's easy to forget to keep your shield away from the big USB-B port that standard Arduino UNOs have.
