Medieval Archaeologists Uncover Sarcophagus Beneath Ardrossan Parish Church on Castle Hill A crucial discovery was made by archaeologists beneath the floorboards of Ardrossan Parish Church on Castle Hill in Ardrossan. The uncovered relic, a medieval sarcophagus, contained fragments of a skull and a piece of leather. Experts deem this find one of the finest examples of lowland Scottish medieval sculpture ever unearthed. Originally situated near the church altar, the sarcophagus features intricate designs that suggest the individual buried was a Christian warrior. A floriated cross on a stepped base, along with a sheathed sword adorning the lid, support this conclusion. The ornamentation on this part of the coffin includes fleur-de-lys and trefoil motifs. The lower section of the sarcophagus is carved in the shape of a man, featuring a raised "pillow" for the head, adding to its unique character.
