The foundation is attributed to Leonese Count Fruela Díaz, who donated land in the early 12th century for a group of Augustinian canons already established there for several years to build a hospital for pilgrims to treat diseases and fatigue from those passing through the path. This original hospital complex must have been very humble, so Leonese King Alfonso XI ordered the construction of the Santa María church around 1216, which is what we can admire today.
