The Arch of Septimius Severus is an ancient triumphal arch located in Rome at the end of the Roman Forum on the foot of the Capitol Hill. It was erected in 203 to honor the military victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons Geta and Caracalla over the Parthians. The structure is made of marble and consists of a main arch flanked by two smaller ones. The facades are richly decorated with columns and low reliefs. Below each attic, a long dedication is engraved. Originally, the letters inscribed in hollows contained bronze letters that have since disappeared. A bronze chariot drawn by the emperor and his two sons once topped the arch. A staircase allows access to the upper platform. The architecture of this triumphal arch served as an inspiration for the Arch of Constantine, as well as the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris.
