According to local tradition, it replaced an older structure called Antigua, built by Alhariella before the reconquest period, which was then occupied by the chapel of St. Benedict. The church also serves as the headquarters for one of the oldest and most revered cofradías (brotherhoods) in the city, dating back to 1400, known as the Confraternity of the Precious Blood of Jesus or the Coloraos. In September, for a few days only, and some others in May, the church makes way for the patron saint's visit: the Virgin of the Fuensanta, who descends from her mountainous sanctuary nearby to reside within the city's walls for several months out of every year.
