Kinich Ahau is a 16th-century Yucatec name for the Maya sun god, also known as God G in codices. In the Classic period, this deity was depicted as a middle-aged man with an aquiline nose and distinctive features - large square eyes that are cross-eyed and a filed incisor in the upper row of teeth. A k'in glyph, representing the sun, is often found in his eyes. Despite being relegated to mythological status elsewhere, Kinich Ahau remained a significant figure among southern Lacandons well into the second half of the 20th century.
