Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, Syria

The iconic Arch of Triumph, also known as the Monumental Arch or Septimius Severus Arch, was a magnificent Roman ornamental gateway built in the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria. Constructed over two centuries ago, during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus from 193 to 211 AD, this iconic structure connected the main street of the Great Colonnade with the majestic Temple of Bel, creating a free and open link between these two historic sites. While some historians believe that the arch was built as a triumphal monument to commemorate the Roman Empire's victories over the Parthians, others argue that it was constructed in honor of Emperor Hadrian, although he had been deceased for more than a century when the arch was erected. The arch is adorned with intricate stone carvings, featuring reliefs depicting plants and geometrical designs that are similar to those found on other arches built during Severus' reign throughout the Roman Empire. In April 2016, a 3D printed replica of the Arch of Triumph was unveiled in Trafalgar Square, London, and will continue to tour the world's capital cities before returning to its original home in Palmyra. Since the 3D model of the arch is not publicly available, we have created our own representation by scanning the printed arch ourselves. Just as the structure served as a passageway for free people, we aim to share its digital representation freely with the world. Cultural heritage is a shared sense of history that should be preserved and made accessible to everyone, without being exploited for commercial gain. As part of this effort, we are contributing to the "Scan The World" initiative, a non-profit project launched by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the globe.
