Arcade Coin Mechanism
thingiverse
This is a custom coin mechanism I crafted specifically for use with MAME arcade machines, utilizing an LED infrared light that bounces off coins as they pass through, triggering a credit. I wanted to preserve the tactile experience of inserting coins without charging customers, so I designed this system to accommodate various denominations - even unusual items like washers or tokens. As it happens, I have a collection of foreign coins from my childhood that fit perfectly. The coin travels down a chute lined with an IR LED and a photodiode light sensor. When the IR light reflects off the passing coin, it activates the diode, simulating a key press. The circuit itself is remarkably straightforward, consisting of just two components, making it compatible with any I-PAC or equivalent (I utilize a repurposed USB game controller). This module can be easily daisy-chained and requires only four wires for the initial setup, plus an additional wire per subsequent module. A cover plate has been included for added protection; however, you can opt to create your own from metal for enhanced durability. The mechanism is designed to accommodate coins of up to 35mm in diameter and 4mm in thickness, ideal for use with an 18mm panel. To catch dropped coins, I installed a small coin box underneath these mechanisms within my cabinet. Simply cut two matching slots as per the image provided.
