The River Tyne's strategic stronghold boasts a rich history, encompassing an ancient Roman Fort, Clifford's Fort and North Tynside headland, which houses remnants of an Iron Age settlement, a pre-conquest monastery, a post-conquest monastery, an imposing ninth century wayside cross, a possible Norman motte, an enclosure castle, an artillery castle and 19th and 20th century coastal defenses. These relics occupy a commanding position on a prominent headland, flanked by steep cliffs on three sides. This site's strategic significance is undeniable, as it has controlled the mouth of the River Tyne since ancient times, with evidence of occupation dating back to the Iron Age era.
