Designed by Arthur Miller, Eugene Stoner, George Sullivan, and Charles Dorchester at ArmaLite in California in 1963, it was meant to compete with the AR-15, which had just become the US military's M16 standard issue rifle. The semi-automatic AR-180 was later produced for civilian markets. Although the AR-18 never became a standard service rifle, its production license was sold to companies in Japan and the UK, influencing several modern firearms.\n\nIn 2001, an updated version of the AR-180B was introduced, featuring a polymer lower receiver replacing the original stamped steel one. This new design combines the lower receiver with the fixed buttstock, eliminating the side-folding stock found on earlier models. The AR-180B also uses standard AR-15 trigger group and rear sight parts, replaces the cranked cocking handle with a straight one, and removes the spring-loaded dust cover for the cocking slot. Additionally, it adopts the AR-15 magazine release system, allowing it to use standard M16 magazines.
