In my pursuit of automating my home, I required a sensor in my water softener that would inform me when it's time to replace the salt blocks. I've opted for a Zigbee sensor connected to my Homey smart home system. The sensor is secured to the exterior of the machine, while its magnet rests atop one of the salt blocks. This magnet is attached to a small notch located on one side of the top casing. As the block dissolves, the dock lowers until it comes into contact with the sensor. At this point, my Homey flow triggers an alert reminding me that it's time for a replacement.
