Juicy green apples are a true delight! An edible fruit that's sweet and succulent, produced by an incredible apple tree (Malus pumila) that's cultivated everywhere in the world. It's the most widely grown species within the Malus genus. Originating in Central Asia, its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, can still be found thriving today. For thousands of years, apples have been a prized fruit in Asia and Europe, brought to North America by early European settlers who recognized their incredible value. Apples hold sacred meanings in many cultures, including Norse, Greek, and European Christian traditions that celebrate their significance. Apple trees grown from seeds can grow quite large, but generally, they're propagated using grafting onto rootstocks, which determine the size of the tree. There are more than 7,500 known apple cultivars worldwide, offering a wide range of desirable traits. Cultivars are carefully bred to meet different tastes and uses, such as cooking, raw consumption, or cider production. Despite the risks from fungal diseases, bacteria, and pests, many effective organic and non-organic methods control these issues. In 2010, scientists successfully mapped out the fruit's genome, providing insights into disease control and selective breeding for better apple cultivation. The global apple production reached a staggering 84.6 million tonnes in 2014, with China accounting for nearly half of that amount (48%).
