Apples are a sweet, edible treat produced by apple trees (Malus domestica), which thrive all over the world. Apple trees, part of the Malus genus, are the most widely cultivated species on earth. Originating in Central Asia, their wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, still grows there today. For thousands of years, apples have been grown not only in Asia and Europe but also in North America, where European settlers first brought them.
