Apostle holding a book

This remarkable bust of a saint originates from the ornate decoration of the Saint-Etienne cathedral's stunning altarpiece in Toulouse. A majestic double portico supported by gleaming arches was lavishly adorned with numerous life-size sculptures, masterfully depicting poignant themes such as mortality (the Dormition) and the glorious Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A detailed drawing created by Bénazet in 1791, now proudly displayed at the Musée du Vieux-Toulouse, vividly illustrates the original arrangement of this breathtaking ensemble. According to a historical document from 1532, this magnificent altarpiece "in the antique style" was meticulously crafted by the renowned artist Nicolas Bachelier. This captivating bust, likely that of an apostle overcome with grief at the passing of the Virgin, stands as one of the few remaining fragments of this illustrious ensemble, which tragically met its demise in 1794.
